Description

In Kenya, Gen Z (over 75% of the population under 35) drives cultural and political discourse through platforms like #KOT on X, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. These platforms are powerful for activism—#KOT alone sparked viral campaigns like #RejectFinanceBill2024—but they’re also breeding grounds for misinformation. Deepfakes, unverified viral videos, and bot-driven narratives erode trust, with 60% of Kenyan youth citing social media as their primary news source (Reuters Institute 2024). Centralized platforms lack transparent verification, and traditional media’s 32% trust level (Edelman 2025) fails Gen Z’s need for authenticity. Consequences include polarized protests (e.g., 2024 anti-tax riots fueled by TikTok rumors) and suppressed voices, costing Kenya $1.5B annually from misinformation (World Bank 2024). Key challenges:
  • Rapid Misinformation Spread: TikTok and Instagram Stories outpace fact-checks.
  • No Decentralized Verification: No immutable, community-driven trust mechanism.
  • Gen Z Barriers: Censorship, siloed platforms, and low digital literacy in verification.
  • Centralized Control: Algorithms prioritize sensationalism over truth.

Problem description

In Kenya, Gen Z (75% under 35) fuels activism on #KOT, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, but misinformation like deepfakes and bots erodes trust. 60% of youth rely on social media for news (Reuters 2024), yet centralized platforms lack transparent verification. Traditional media’s 32% trust level (Edelman 2025) fails them. Misinformation costs $1.5B yearly (World Bank 2024), fueling protests. Challenges: rapid misinformation spread, no decentralized trust, Gen Z censorship, and algorithmic bias.

Proposed Solutions

KOTVerify is a decentralized media integrity hub that empowers Kenyan Gen Z to verify and amplify authentic content. It aggregates posts from X (#KOT), Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, uses AI agents for real-time fact-checking, and timestamps verified content on a blockchain for transparency. Designed for hackathon execution, it leverages the ASI Stack, AgentVerse, CUDOS, and Metta-lang to deliver a scalable, user-friendly prototype.
