Deepfunding AI for Peace Hackathon
Problem Statement Document
Theme: AI for Peace
This document outlines four strategic problem statements emanating from the ideation challenge, which was held over a period of a month. It is designed to inspire innovative AI solutions that advance peacebuilding across personal, societal, and global contexts. Participants are encouraged to leverage state-of-the-art AI techniques—ranging from natural language processing and reinforcement learning to blockchain and computer vision—to address the complex question of how AI can bring peace in a time like this. Participants are to choose any one of these challenges and dig deep, bringing their own unique approach and creativity to build. See these problem statements and the accompanying guide as more of a guide, it is not to limit your capability in answering the defined problem statements.
Problem Statement 1: Peace with Oneself
Emotional distress from unresolved trauma, often rooted in childhood wounds, manifests as repeated patterns of avoidance, anger, and neglect that not only undermine individual well-being but also erode community cohesion and societal peace. Despite growing awareness of the impact of trauma, there is a lack of accessible, holistic, and personalized tools that can both proactively identify emotional wounds and guide users through tailored healing journeys. The greatest peace is the peace with oneself, the ability to stay calm in a world full of noise that seeks to soak into the soul.
Challenge: Develop an AI-driven solution that empowers individuals to recognize, monitor, and heal deep-rooted emotional wounds or stay sober with oneself.
You can look into any of the following or their combination as a cue on what to solve that can be relevant to this challenge, or you are free to think creatively around it.
1. A personalized self-care and trauma reveal routine that reveals inner hurts and cycles of the heart.
- Guided exercises and or advice that bring calm to the soul
- Seamless connections to vetted mental health professionals
- A personalised AI agent that listens to your pains
N/B: The list is endless, participants are to think about how they can build around this challenge in their own way
Problem Statement 2: War of Misinformation
In today’s world of technology, the war of misinformation fuels many more crises than the prevailing disputes themselves. The rapid dissemination of false narratives erodes trust, exacerbates societal divisions, incites violence, and undermines peacebuilding efforts worldwide. In a world with conflict-affected regions, a world of heightened social and political tensions, fragile information ecosystems, linguistic diversity, limited digital literacy, and verification challenges, the threat of false information has never been more alarming.
Challenge: Develop an AI system, framework, agent or service that helps strengthen information integrity, foster informed dialogue, and sustain peace in the world’s most vulnerable regions.
The following can act as a clue to help you think of possible solutions while building this
- The AI may support Diverse Languages: Processes and analyzes content in at least three typologically distinct languages common to conflict zones.
- It will help if it can detect and flag falsehoods: Leverages scalable NLP models to identify potential misinformation in text, audio, or social-media streams.
- If it can integrate a Human-in-the-Loop Verification system, it makes it better: Incorporates community feedback and trusted local validators to confirm or correct AI judgments.
- If it delivers Actionable Outputs, it can be more resourceful: it provides clear credibility scores, provenance trails, and contextual explanations to empower end users and moderators.
N/B: The list is endless, participants are to think about how they can build around this challenge in their own way
Problem Statement 3: Tools For Diplomacy
There are no integrated toolkits for peace. From grassroots mediators to state negotiators, all lack the AI-driven infrastructure needed to rehearse peace processes, bridge divides, and co-create policies that endure and ensure peace.
Challenge
Build an AI Diplomacy Toolkit that can be used for resolving personal, local, or global conflicts by diplomats or others with vested interest in the peace process.
The following can act as a clue to aid you in thinking of possible solutions while building this
- Simulates Negotiations: Leverage reinforcement learning and LLM/NLP to recreate multi-party dispute scenarios (e.g., border talks, community disputes) for safe strategy testing
- Facilitates Agentic Dialogue: Use agentic AI to moderate conversations and propose de-escalation paths in digital and offline channels
- Designs Reconciliation Projects: Integrate cultural-cognitive mapping and trauma-informed dialogue facilitation to generate locally tailored peace-building initiatives.
- Enables Digital Consensus: Employ blockchain for secure, auditable voting and multilingual NLP for inclusive idea-sharing and sentiment analysis, fostering transparent policy co-creation.
Problem Statement 4: Refugee Lives Matter
People living in refugee camps endure more than just a lack of shelter. Daily survival hinges on a spectrum of interconnected needs—adequate nutrition, safe water and sanitation, basic healthcare, psychosocial support, education and livelihood opportunities, legal guidance, and a sense of agency and community. Yet systems for aid delivery and support remain siloed, inefficient, and often fail to account for the full range of challenges refugees face, leaving gaps that prolong suffering, erode dignity, and undermine long-term stability.
Challenge: Design AI solutions that address the holistic and diverse needs of refugee-camp populations.
The following can act as a clue to aid you in thinking of possible solutions while building this
- Transparent Resource Distribution: AI to Track food, water, medicine, and shelter supplies end-to-end using blockchain or distributed-ledger techniques to ensure fairness, reduce waste, and build trust between aid providers and recipients.
- Adaptive Needs Assessment: Fuse AI analysis of on-the-ground data (camp registration records, IoT sensors, satellite imagery, and community surveys) to continuously identify emerging vulnerabilities—malnutrition hotspots, water scarcity zones, or healthcare backlogs—and recommend dynamic reallocation of resources.
- Integrated Health & Psychosocial Support: Offer an AI agent that triages physical ailments, schedules telemedicine or referral to nearby clinics, and provides culturally sensitive mental-health resources (guided self-care exercises, grief counseling) in multiple languages.
- Education & Livelihood Pathways: Curate personalized learning modules—literacy, vocational skills, entrepreneurship—and match users with micro-task or remote-work opportunities, helping camp residents regain purpose and economic independence.
- Multilingual Legal & Rights Assistance: Embed a conversational interface that guides users through asylum procedures, document preparation, and local labor rights in their native tongue, reducing exploitation and fostering self-advocacy.
