Description

This solution leverages blockchain technology to provide secure, portable digital identities for refugees and displaced individuals who lack physical documentation. By storing encrypted records like birth certificates or asylum statuses on a blockchain, accessible via a simple app or QR code, it ensures individuals can prove their identity and access critical services like food rations, healthcare, or education, even in chaotic or resource-scarce settings.

Detailed Idea

Alignment with DF goals (BGI, Platform growth, community)

The system uses a permissioned blockchain to store digital identities, ensuring security and accessibility without requiring constant internet connectivity. Each individual receives a unique identifier (e.g., a QR code or alphanumeric code) linked to their encrypted records, including name, date of birth, and asylum status. These records are created during initial registration by aid workers using a mobile app. The blockchain is hosted on a decentralized network of nodes managed by trusted humanitarian organizations, ensuring data integrity. Individuals can present their QR code via a low-cost phone or printed card to verify their identity at service points (e.g., food distribution centers). Offline verification is enabled through cached data on aid workers’ devices, updated during periodic syncs. The system is designed for low-literacy users, with simple interfaces and multilingual support.

Problem description

In refugee camps, many lack IDs due to loss or never having had them. Without documentation, refugees can't access food, healthcare, education, or asylum processes—essentially becoming invisible to aid systems. Paper records are easily lost or corrupted, while digital databases are vulnerable to hacks in unstable regions. This leaves millions unable to prove their identity or access basic rights.

Proposed Solutions

The blockchain identity system solves refugee documentation problems by providing: portable digital IDs via QR codes; tamper-proof encrypted records on blockchain; offline verification capability; streamlined service access; and personal control over identity data.

This system could integrate with the SingularityNet (AGIX) blockchain ecosystem.
