Overview

We propose developing a tailored personal nutrition service with health as the primary goal. By leveraging AI and scientific research, we will provide frequent guidance on what to consume, when to consume it, in what quantities, and the reasoning behind these recommendations. Nutrition greatly impacts personal health, which in turn affects healthcare costs, productivity, quality of life, longevity, mental well-being, relationships, and the likelihood of developing chronic diseases. Although this is common knowledge, it's difficult to act on continuously and properly. Our service aims to bridge this gap, empowering individuals to make informed, health-focused nutritional choices.

The core problem we are aiming to solve

The core problem we are aiming to solve is the disconnect between people's desire to eat healthily and their ability to do so consistently. Despite the wealth of information available on nutrition and its impact on health, many individuals struggle to make informed, personalized choices that align with their unique needs and goals.

We cannot expect the commercial profit driven food industry to help us make more informed decisions. As we cannot expect our governments to implement effective regulation simply because of the complexity.

We feel we -as consumers- need to be in control and have other triggers to make decisions about food and nutrients.

Our specific solution to this problem

Our tailored nutrition service, powered by AI, aims to bridge this gap by providing individuals with personalized, data-driven recommendations that are easy to understand and implement. By offering frequent, context-specific guidance and support, we empower people to make informed, health-focused nutritional choices that align with their unique needs, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and quality of life.
In essence, we are solving the problem of making personalized, evidence-based nutrition accessible, actionable, and sustainable for everyone.

We feel that data driven information providing can be the catalyst. Start small, personal and expand from there. Implementations in many food related services are possible, think of shopping carts, meal services or even restaurants taking nutrients into consideration.

Project details

End user functionality / frontend

We intend to provide a frontend interface for end users to interact with the backend and AI model. In the frontend the user will be able to:

  • Maintain profile information (gender, date of birth, height, weight etc)

  • View personalized daily nutritional advice

  • Get specific and varied food suggestions to fulfill the daily advice

  • Validate a users’ daily food intake vs. the nutritional advice

  • Keep a daily food consumption log

  • Historical overview of nutritional performance (charts with daily achievements)

AI utilization

By leveraging machine learning algorithms and large datasets, AI systems can analyze an individual's unique health profile, dietary preferences, and lifestyle factors to generate tailored nutrition recommendations. These AI models can consider a wide range of data points, such as age, gender, weight, physical activity levels, medical history, and food preferences, to create a comprehensive understanding of a person's nutritional needs. With this information, AI can suggest meal plans, recipes, and dietary modifications that are optimized for an individual's specific health goals, such as weight management, disease prevention, or performance enhancement. As AI continues to advance, it has the potential to revolutionize the field of personalized nutrition, making it more accessible, accurate, and effective for people seeking to improve their health and well-being.
We also intend to leverage AI to classify food from pictures, making it easier for users to keep a log of their food intake. Other (non MVP) thoughts of using AI for this project include extracting nutritional values from food packaging and working with food producers to increase the nutritional values of their food.

Monetization

While we intend to initially only focus on adding value for the end users and building a working, valuable MVP. We do recognize that to keep the project sustainable a monetization strategy needs to be implemented. To that end there are several options we intend to explore:

  • Subscription model by offering a free trial to get users engaged, or a freemium model in which some basic features will be provided for free without expiry, while the more advanced / important functions will be provided upon subscription. Related consideration: subscriptions could take various forms: personal, family, class (eg. for a gym teacher).

  • Collaborations with service providers. When the userbase is significantly large enough it will become interesting for service providers to make targeted  offers or services available via the platform (note that no personal data will be shared with third parties, privacy comes first).
    Considerations: meal delivery services, grocery delivery services, local food producers / farmers,  diet coaches, other health related services.

  • Non personal data sharing. Generic nutritional data sharing for restaurants, schools, lunchrooms etc. They could have their recipes checked for nutritional values via the AI model and / or make generic recommendations to their consumers.

  • Whitelabel products. Eg. for health insurance providers or companies and their employees in general. It’s beneficial for companies such as these to keep their employees healthy.

Privacy

We are committed to protecting our users' privacy and will implement robust technical, organizational, and legal measures to safeguard personal information and ensure compliance with applicable data protection regulations.
Note that the AI models do not need personal user information to provide correct output. We will never share users' personal information with third parties. However, we may use anonymized and aggregated user data to allow partners to make targeted offers without identifying individual users.

Gamification

For gamification aspects the initial considerations are:

  • Rewarding users with points and “fun food facts” for active and repeating engagement with the platform. Setting personal records eg. for a streak of X days nutritional value reached.

  • Giving users a chance to win nutrition related prizes based on their engagement. Prizes to be made available by service providers or external parties.

  • Implementation of a personal nutrition score, based on historical nutritional data provided by the user over time, a rolling score can be generated.
    This score can also be used to have a user compare his / her results with peers (anonymized of course).

While searching for existing solutions we have found there are many opportunities for improvements, such as:

  • While existing products focus on monetization and might have location based limitations; we intend to focus on providing value first for anyone, anywhere. This is a key differentiator.

  • We intend to include considerations such as genetics and ethnic origin.

  • While existing products consider a persons’ build and current overall health status; we also intend to allow the optional use of personal sensor data and / or blood test data for improved personalized results.

  • Inconsistency and lack of motivation: maintaining a healthy diet requires consistent effort and motivation, which can be difficult to sustain without ongoing support and guidance. We intend to apply gamification to make the service a fun and engaging experience.

  • Current solutions often focus on weight loss, or working towards another specific goal. While our goal is having people eat enough healthy food, consciously.

As a senior software engineer with 20+ years of experience in different industries (including marketing) I will be building the initial version of the service, the website as well as promote the service. I've built a  network of experienced professionals that can provide feedback. The motivation from this project comes from personal experience and desire to add value to society. Milestone 1 - API Calls & Hostings

Description

This milestone represents the required reservation of 25% of your total requested budget for API calls or hosting costs. Because it is required we have prefilled it for you and it cannot be removed or adapted.

Deliverables

You can use this amount for payment of API calls on our platform. Use it to call other services or use it as a marketing instrument to have other parties try out your service. Alternatively you can use it to pay for hosting and computing costs.

Milestone 2 - Development - MVP

Description

Milestone to build the minimum viable product. The first milestone to release.

Deliverables

The minimum viable product should be able to run take a minimum amount of user specific input and produce a minimum amount of user specific output. Minimum amount of input data being; age gender height weight. Minimum amount of output data being; desired (daily) nutritional intake.

Milestone 3 - Develop Release Version

Description

Expanding on the MVP to add functionality to be executed after the MVP phase.

Deliverables

Accept more input data such as: dietary preferences and restrictions activity level genetic considerations allergies intolerances ethnic origin and environmental factors. Produce output that takes the additional input into consideration. Output should produce desired nutritional intake options for combinations of nutrients / food to fulfill the desired intake as well as reasoning about the suggestions.

Description

Expanding on the previous version improve existing functionality and setup for future plans.

    Very useful and feasible project

    Seems like a great idea to make a positive impact. The initiator seems to have the experience and knowledge to accomplish this. Viability and desirability may be the toughest for this project. Marketing such a product and getting people to actively engage is a challenge. Nontheless I would love to see this project come to fruition and see where it goes.

    Transparency in data collection and use

    Almost any highly feasible proposal aims to apply AI in the real world. This is also what humanity expects. This proposal is no exception. In addition, transparency must also be carefully considered when this proposal is brought to life - then: transparency about data collection and use as well as letting users manage their own data easily without Not having your security exposed is something I think about a lot.     We recognize that the milestone allocation may seem small. However we believe this allocation is sufficient for successful execution as planned by working iteratively (or agile if you will), focussing on the MVP. As we are currently a one person multidisciplinary team -be it with a strong network of professionals and advisors- we do expect to invest time and effort that will be without pay. We feel this demonstrates our commitment and belief in the project.
    After delivering the MVP and gathering valuable user feedback we can start working on monetizing strategies, and / or if at all necessary we can turn to our network for additional funding but do note that the latter is not preferred.

    Potential project has an unconvincing orientation

    The project aims to open a new direction in applying AI in personalized nutrition. If successful, the project could show the potential of AI in solving real-world problems. However, there are two problems with the project. First, I have not seen any role for AI in this NutrIterate project and the proponent has not described how the application of AI in personalized nutrition helps this project make a difference. Additionally, the intention to focus on providing value first instead of preparing a sustainable fee model is a mistake. Of course, I don't think focusing on providing value to users is wrong, but the project owner needs to have a financially self-sustainable model for the project. I hope the project owner will consider this issue. Maybe the project owner will think I'm a one-sided person, but honestly, I don't like a project that requests funding every few months for the reason of focusing on value. That is simply an excuse, nothing more, nothing less.

    To elaborate on the fee model issue, you are absolutely right. While we feel providing value should be prioritized, we do recognize that to keep the project sustainable a monetization strategy needs to be implemented, and of course we have considered this. We strongly feel that the right monetization strategy strongly depends on the value that is added and how the product is eventually used by its users. For that reason we will consider the options during the development and feedback loop stage.

    Among the topics we addressed were some of your concerns regarding; AI integration, privacy and monetization strategies. We hope the updated description will give you a better understanding.

    On the topic of focusing on a specific niche, we feel that while the project may be more valuable to certain focus groups we need to build to project for a broader audience in order to make the biggest possible impact. This is also a strategic differentiator, where most competitors do focus on a specific user group or goal, we feel we need to focus on the bigger picture. We can however still target specific user groups via marketing while keeping the application generic.

    Pilot testing: you make a very good point. While we have not mentioned this specifically it is inherently part of our way of working. Start small, test with a small group, get feedback, refine, repeat and then broaden the scope. Thank you for pointing that out though, great advice for anyone building a project.
