Overview

Following the recommendations of the Supervisory Council’s Blueprint, this RFP will call for the establishment of an Ethics Training and Development Body and the requirements for the Ethics and Safety body.

Text from the Blueprint:

Funding and creation of a Ethics Training and Development body tasked with creating a minimum ethics and safety training program, and ensuring at least 50% of paid people within the Foundation and the other paid units have this basic ethics training within 18 months.

This proposal is the natural continuation of the work on the Blueprint, taking a deeper dive into the critical issue surrounding creation of a Benevolent AGI: the definition of benevolence.

Proposal Description

How Our Project Will Contribute To The Growth Of The Decentralized AI Platform

Given the power of SingularityNET and its leadership role in AGI, it is important that we take steps to ensure benevolence. Ethics training is the low bar in terms of benevolence. Having the proper training is a non-coercive mechanism that provides a basis for the kinds of internal conversations the ecosystem needs to have in order to develop tools that truly benefit mankind and the planet. This  will also help projects comply with EU and other regulation regarding ethics and safety.

Our Team

This is a one-person project at this time, with Grace Rachmany working on the requirements. Grace is one of the co-authors of the Blueprint for Decentralization. She has authored more than 100 whitepapers for Web3 projects, and is the author of DAO specifications for a number of projects in the space.  For example:  https://github.com/GraceRachmany/tomiDAO-specifications

The core problem we are aiming to solve

To date, there has been very little budgeting or attention in the SingularityNET ecosystem to the ethical and safety issues surrounding AI or AGI. There has been a fundamental assumption that the developers of these technologies will make them for the benefit of all, despite the fact that the majority of the AI tools today have been developed for the benefit of the individuals and companies who created them, with very little regard to the influence they have on society as a whole.

Very few people within the SingularityNET ecosystem have any background or training in the ethics of AI and AGI, and there is no requirement for anyone within the ecosystem to have such training. While it is easy to see that everyone in the ecosystem is well-intentioned, most people are not well versed in systems thinking and in risk assessment. Therefore, it is essential that SIngularityNET have a program in place for creating technology and AI ethics training for all of those who want to receive this training.

Our specific solution to this problem

We will produce an RFP to be presented in the next round of funding for Deep Funding, and that can be a multi-purpose RFP that could be used by any of the entities or spinoffs in the ecosystem as the framework for an Ethics Training and Development Body for AI and AGI. The RFP could be customized for other technologies where ethics training is an important pillar for development of the technology.

The RFP will contain the following sections:

  • Review of existing AI and AGI ethics considerations.

  • Review of approaches to technology ethics training.

  • Topics to be covered in the training, including levels and minimum / maximum coverage of the topics.

  • Size and composition of a council or body that will be tasked with execution of the framework.

  • Implementation objectives and measures over the SNET ecosystem.

  • Suggested milestones for organizations applying for the RFP.

  • Suggested budget for creating the council and implementation of the program.

Competition and USPs

Currently there is no requirement for training within the ecosystem. While many online and in-person courses exist, there is no official curriculum or way for SingularityNET ecosystem participants to know what a complete ethics training could look like.

Needed resources

I will be hiring a researcher unless someone from the community steps up to the job.

Given that the project is currently led by a single individual, what strategies do you have in place to ensure effective collaboration and engagement with stakeholders from various backgrounds and expertise levels in the development of the Ethics Training and Development Body?

This is ONLY a project for writing an RFP. It does not include the recruitment and engagement of stakeholders. It includes creating an RFP that will be used in the next round of funding. Please read the actual call for RFP Design. I am not proposing to create the council, I am proposing to create an RFP to present to the community. If you would carefully read the call for proposals relevant to RFP Design, you would realize your question is not relevant.

How do you plan to ensure widespread adoption and participation in the ethics training program across the SingularityNET ecosystem, especially considering the diverse range of individuals and organizations involved?

The question is something the proposers who answer the RFP will have to provide. Please read the actual call for RFP Design. Hello, and first thank you for sharing this thoughtful proposal. AI Ethics is a critical topic for all of us to understand and build better. It seems elevating the ethics understanding of the organization is a good project, and I wonder why you chose to have only 50% of the organization beneficially trained? And what are the plans to enact this, is there an agreement with the organization, or can you make them, or is this just a statement in the proposal? I hope this question makes sense. I'm also worried that you say that you also don't know enough about AI ethics and will hire someone. This person who will do the work seems like a critical component but there aren't any lists showing necessary qualification, expertise, or role needs listed for this person, and this doesn't seem well thought out. Is it perhaps possible to research AI ethics, and find a partner with exprience who can present to the community, so voters understand the future directions of the RFP with the person who will do the work.I would like SingularityNET to make sure they are training ethically everyone working in AI, and I hope you can elevate the proposal to demonstrate how it can be done in fact. Perhaps you could share in more clarity about what is actually lacking right now, what is needed for the gaps, and how you and an AI ethics expert might help to support.Thank you for all your time in answering, if you can.

These are great points and I will address them here. 50% is the milestone here for the first Ethics body. My working assumption is that after 1 year, there would be a progress review and we would elect new people or need to expand within 2 years. Ideally, it would be 100%, but I don't think that is achievable in the first iteration of the ethics body. Of course, those applying for the RFP can propose a higher accomplishment level. You are correct that I do not have the expertise in ethics and safety.  My expertise is: Decentralized processes, including expertise in how to think about choosing and/or electing a stewardship or governing body. Writing RFPs and specifications. It would be better for SNET if we had ethics experts. We do not. In this Deep Funding round, I think there are only 2 or 3 proposals having anything to do with ethics and safety.  The Supervisory Council (including myself) considers ethics and safety of primary importance. I wish someone else would have submittted anything that would give me confidence that we can address this, but nobody else did. Bringing in others is not bad (as your question implies). On the contrary, I will need to interview experts for this RFP, and when we post it as an RFP in the next DF round, it will draw ethics and safety experts into our community as they bid on this RFP. I do not expect to bid on the RFP (indeed, that would be a conflict of interest). This RFP is designed to be the first step in drawing in the right experts.

Thank you. I encourage you and others to vote based on the following questions: Do you believe I will deliver the work as promised?  Is it good, bad, or neutral if I hire people to help me? Are the other proposals in this category a better use of the funds?   I trust the community to choose what is best for the ecosystem.

    Great use of this category

I appreciate Grace's presence in the SNET community and find her voice very important. This proposal is for the development of a RFP, not a ready-made solution, which is a good choice imo. The writing of the RFP should be as collaborative and inclusive as possible, and Grace is great at that mode of action, so I'm expecting a useful community development process coming out of this :-)

This can address a critical need in AI deployment

Hey Grace. Great job. I have had to take a thorough look into your proposal. At first glance, You were able to make a great problem definition

For me, I believe the creation of such a body addresses a critical need in the development and deployment of AI technologies, particularly as the field advances towards the realization of Benevolent AGI. I believe your proposal is keen on prioritizing ethics and safety training for individuals within the Foundation and other paid units.  This initiative will in a long run promote responsible AI development and deployment practices within SNET. Furthermore, by establishing a minimum ethics and safety training program, the Ethics Training and Development Body can contribute to building a culture of ethical awareness and accountability within the AI community, ultimately enhancing public trust and confidence in AI technologies.

Kudos to you and your team !

    High score for Feasibility

I must praise GraceDAO and his colleagues for their seriousness in creating ideas. Bravo! In terms of team identity, GraceDAO has presented itself very clearly and its intention to collaborate by hiring more people. This transparency is few other proposals have. I encourage other project owners to learn GraceDAO.
The process of developing the Ethical Training and Development Agency requires colleagues to collaborate with each other over a relatively long period of time, we hope GraceDAO will pay attention to this factor. Wishing the author success.

    Ethics Training Body

The problem this proposal would solve is that there is very little budget or attention within the SingularityNET ecosystem towards ethical and safety issues surrounding AI or AGI. I see that ethics is a big issue in society, and it is also a very practical issue in the AI environment.
The solution of this proposal is that they will produce an RFP to be presented in the next round of funding for Deep Funding, and that can be a multi-purpose RFP that can be used by any of the entities or spinoffs in the ecosystem as the framework for an Ethics Training and Development Body for AI and AGI.
There are two points that I would like to contribute. First, they should clearly define the start and end times of milestones. Second, they should look for more members to do the work. Currently this proposal has only one member.

Thank you for this great feedback. My estimate is that the full project will take 6-8 weeks. Although I have candidates for the research role, I wanted to give priority to anyone from the community who wants to do this work together with me on this project. If funded, I can do the research myself or hire someone.

    Additional Team Members

The project's focus on creating a minimum ethics and safety training program for individuals within the SingularityNET Foundation and other paid units is commendable. This initiative not only promotes ethical awareness and accountability but also aligns with regulatory requirements, such as those outlined by the EU and other governing bodies.

Grace Rachmany's expertise and experience as a co-author of the Blueprint for Decentralization, along with her background in Web3 projects and DAO specifications, provide a solid foundation for leading this initiative. However, considering the complexity and scope of the project, it may be beneficial to involve additional team members with diverse skill sets and perspectives to ensure comprehensive coverage of ethics training requirements.

This is great feedback. Perhaps we have different ideas of what the "RFP" means. The idea of the RFP is to create an RFP (problem definition) that can be submitted to Deep Funding such that qualified people can make proposals to meet the RFP. All of the things that ou have specifiedd as weaknesses are the actual work that is being proposed. The proposal is to do all of the research that you are suggeting.

Potential to reduce ethical lapses in AI

I believe this will reduce the risk of ethical lapses and potential harm associated with AI technologies by providing personnel with the tools and training needed to navigate ethical dilemmas and make responsible decisions. However, I am concerned about Ensuring the long-term sustainability and continuity of the ethics training initiative beyond the initial 18-month timeframe. It would be useful to incorporate ongoing updates and adaptations to address evolving ethical challenges in AI development. Cheers !

The ideas is highly desirable, but needs work

AI Ethics is a central topic, and building AI for benefit does not accidentally happen. The ideas of providing more developer and general ethics training for people building such systems is important, not just for SingularityNET, which makes this an oddly specific project not aimed at general human wellbeing, which might be better.

The proposer shares genuine concerns, but maybe a focus candidate for a Deep Funding Pool in the next round.

    Feasibility -
The AI Ethics body of information is large and adapting. Designing a system which can help real program people understand the impact of their development is important. However, statements like 'ensuring at least 50% of paid people within the Foundation and the other paid units have this basic ethics training within 18 months.' are not highly thought out toward implementation in the timeframe.

    Viability -
More developers are interested in the impact of their building in ethical sense, and are ready for training. Such education can be welcome and needed in many places, especially if it can be made relevant and engaging. Plans for adoption and spread were not outlined, and there wasn't ifnformation about what would be in such a course that would be valuable toward the goal.

    Desirability -
Having well-planned education initiatives that are impactful are greatly desirable. It would be very helpful to see more information about how this initiative plans to differentiate from other offerings, what will make it unique and valuable, other than targeting SingularityNET as a powerful AGI developer. The proposal may have needed more consideration to develop such excellent solutions.

    Usefulness -
Such an initiative could be useful in spreading more information and understanding about how building and developing impacts people and users, and for instance could be very useful as a training program in Deep Funding. The proposal didn't cover any special topics, for one examples the ethics of AGI, and so might not add any new developments to the AI Ethics learning spaces already available.

I don't think you understood the purpose of the proposal. It is not to create the ethics and training program. It is to create an RFP for the next funding round. That is the purpose of the RFP Design Phase. Of course these things are not "well thought out" because that is not the purpose of this phase of the project. This is a research project to create an RFP and you are rating this as if it is a proposal to create the ethics and training body.
