Project details
AI-Powered Legal Database for the High Courts of Ghana
A DeepFunding Proposal under the BGI Round
1. Overview
The High Courts of Ghana play a critical role in the country’s legal system, yet they face significant challenges in accessing legal texts, case law, and research materials. Many legal professionals, researchers, and students struggle to find relevant legal information due to limited physical resources, inefficient manual research methods, and the high cost of proprietary legal research tools.
This project proposes the development of an AI-powered legal database, utilizing a Large Language Model (LLM) and natural language processing (NLP) tools to digitize, structure, and analyze Ghanaian legal texts, case law, and statutes. The system will provide free, intelligent, and comprehensive access to legal resources, enabling law students, legal practitioners, and researchers to search, summarize, and analyze legal information efficiently.
2. Problem Statement
Ghanaians, including legal professionals, students, and researchers, face severe limitations in accessing legal knowledge due to:
• Insufficient Legal Resources: Many court libraries lack up-to-date legal texts, case laws, and statutes, leaving legal professionals without key reference materials.
• Time-Consuming Research Methods: Lawyers and researchers often manually sift through scarce printed materials, slowing case preparation and legal analysis.
• Restricted Digital Access: AI-powered legal research tools are often expensive and proprietary, making them inaccessible to most Ghanaians.
• Lack of Student Engagement in Legal Research: Law students lack structured opportunities to participate in digitizing and modernizing legal research in Ghana.
3. Solution
This project will create an AI-driven, cloud-based legal database that provides fast, intelligent access to Ghanaian legal texts while fostering collaboration between students and the judiciary.
Key features of the platform include:
• AI-Powered Search Engine: Users can enter legal questions in plain language, and the AI will return relevant statutes, case law, and legal precedents.
• Legal Document Summarization: AI-generated summaries of lengthy legal documents will help users quickly grasp key legal principles.
• Precedent Matching & Case Analysis: The system will suggest relevant past cases and identify legal strategies based on case law.
• Student-Led Legal Text Transcription: Law students will contribute by transcribing and validating legal texts, keeping the database up-to-date.
• Cost-Effective Technical Assistance: Automated FAQs, video tutorials, and a community-driven support model will help users navigate the platform effectively.
The project will leverage AI and blockchain technology to ensure data integrity, accuracy, and scalability, providing Ghana’s first open-access, AI-enhanced legal research tool.
4. Judicial & Institutional Support
This initiative is developed in partnership with Just Keep Going Inc., Peggy Crabbe (Legal Librarian at the Ghana Law Court Complex), and the Ghanaian Judiciary. It has the support of:
• Justice Abena Oppong, High Court Judge overseeing library services.
• Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, Chief Justice of Ghana, who is reviewing the proposal.
• Ghanaian law schools, where students will participate in transcribing legal texts, making the database a collaborative and interactive resource.
